Time Varying Databases: Time dependency in database is common in an Operational Database and is not only common, but critical, for a Data Warehouse. Building a database that maintains history of changes over time at first appears to be simple. however the complexities lie in the details - especially the business requirements and how the database will be used. We will discuss:

  • Business rules and the time factors
  • Properly incorporating time into a logical data model
  • Logical to Physical design considerations

Dr. Rosenbaum received his doctorate from Columbia University and has been working in the computer field for over 30 years. He has extensive experience as a practitioner as well as a teacher in many areas of data architecture and enterprise architectural planning. Clients have included government agencies, banking, insurance, utilities, manufacturing, aerospace, and communications industry. He is currently working for Concentrx, Inc. as a Principal Enterprise Architect.

Mike Thurber

The presentation is based on a feature article I wrote and published in the June 1, 1999 issue of Intelligent Enterprise magazine entitled "Open Road to Strategic Value." It describes a case study of how operational data was transformed through a Knowledge Discovery Framework (KDF), uncovering a new and highly promising marketing strategy for General Motors.

Ever wondered if your business is missing some critical knowledge that is buried in your business data, somewhere? Maybe you are already investing heavily into your reporting and business intelligence infrastructure, but sense that some important business questions are still not getting objective answers. This presentation will present an exciting story of the analytical process, with business people, analysts, and technology working together to uncover profound new business knowledge. You will find this refreshingly applicable to many business scenarios.

Mike Thurber is currently an analyst for Capital One's Call Center Data Warehouse, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the information to meet business needs. Prior to this, he spent 14 years with EDS, including three years as a Business Intelligence analyst for several clients, including
General Motors Brand Analysts who were central to the story in the presentation. With broad exposure to OLAP, warehousing, data mining, and visualization technologies, and a passionate analytical drive, he has presented publicly to several companies and business intelligence conferences.

Embracing XML—Strategic Implications for Data Administrators/Architects

As data administrators move to embrace XML, there are a number of lessons to be learned from early experiences with the technologies. These point to a series of strategic implications for data administrators/ architects including: (1) An expanded definition of data management to include unstructured organizational data (2) Expanded data management roles in applications development using portal technologies (3) Preparation of organizational data (including data quality) for e-business. Combined these implications point to a more complex role for data managers.
