
Where did that nice piece of stained glass come from?This beautiful opalescent glass window is titled Knowledge Window.
It is part of a set that is mounted in the Hawley Building on the Downtown Campus of the University at Albany, SUNY. According to the web page the latin. "Per aspera ad astra" translates to:
To the Heights through hardships.
Another noted latin scholar indicates a slightly different translation
Though trial and tribulation to the stars.
This second translation was as their motto by the British Royal Air Force during World War Two. It has also been chosen as the theme for the knowledge window.
The SUNY webpage describes the windows as having been created by the Chapman Stained Glass Studio, founded in Albany, N.Y. in 1898. The University offers the entire set of windows as a set of bookmarkers. Please see the University of Albany webpage at:
